Our mission
To educate future and current generations on the importance of local and global aquatic ecosystems through partnership with the working-waterfront and the aquarium industry by providing hands on education, science, and interaction with a variety of species and work shadow opportunities
NEASC Vision:
The North East Aquarium Science Center (NEASC) is aiming to provide an accessible, fun and scientific environment for the education of aquatic ecosystems. The NEASC, located in the heart of Biddeford, Maine is currently home to a variety of different species of aquatic fauna, invertebrates, and fish, including an alien-like sea apple, a genetically distinct clownfish and even a mimic octopus. The goal for NEASC is to take these extraordinary exhibits with us through our growth and allow for many other exhibits to join them along the way. Once finished NEASC will feature exhibits from the Gulf of Maine, Maine's lakes and rivers, Caribbean, Indo-Pacific, major rivers, and major lakes across the world.
To provide an engaging and scientific environment for the education of aquatic ecosystems NEASC is looking to reinvigorate the aquarium hobby and also provide internships and job shadow opportunities in the variety of fishing/aquaculture industries in New England.
NEASC will foster a relationship with the working waterfront of Maine. An industry that has supported Mainers for generations and one that relies heavily on the success, and protection of Maine marine ecosystems and their respective animal populations. NEASC will look to bring exhibits and information about the lobstering industry, aquaculture industry and ecotourism industry in Maine. Many job shadow opportunities, volunteer work, and internships will be offered with partnered fishermen to foster the care of this industry into the new generation of children.
NEASC will also offer resources to learn how to properly set up and care for an aquarium, as well as recommendations for proper practices and tools. What better way to learn about marine and freshwater fauna than to learn how to take care of them and work in their native environments. In the future NEASC looks to feature a youtube channel highlighting these techniques as well as offer in person classes for students and adults alike. Classes and camps will consist of activities and hand on experiences to teach and provide applicable skills for all who partake. Currently NEASC features several different scientific activities, such as microscope techniques, basic water chemistry and general species identification. The amazing aspect of aquarium science is variable in difficulty. Aquariums are a uniquely adaptable hobby, offering flexibility to match the aquarist's desired level of engagement and challenge. Whether for beginners or seasoned experts, the complexity of maintaining an aquarium can be tailored to individual preferences. This allows NEASC to offer a broad range of scientific complexity and difficulty in its classes and activities allowing all to stay engaged and learning.
